Relief efforts have multiplied in the area over the last few days. Considerable support has been provided to some pockets of the affected areas, a large number of people have not received any support owing to inaccessibility of far flung areas and the fact that they are off the main roads. Most of these areas are very remote, the population is scattered and there are only bricked tracks and mud tracks that people traditionally use to get to their household clusters. At other places land sliding and avalanches have blocked in-roads and minor routes.

Following are some of the areas which need immediate attention:

• Kaghan Valley - upland from Balakot to Malkandi - very few efforts were made to rescue the seriously injured persons. According to a rough estimate about 100,000 people are affected in Paras, Kewai, Malkandi and Manoor Valley.

• Siran Valley, Bughar Mang, Devi, and Dadar in Mansehra District,

• Jhelum Valley in Muzaffarabad AJK - UC Garhi Dopatta, Awan Pati, Kai Manga, Langla, Hattian Bala and beyond (The road from Muzaffarabad to Garhi Dopatta is expected to be cleared and open for traffic by October 13, 2005). Presently it is open up to Tandali only.

• Neelam Valley in Muzaffarabad AJK - Patekka and beyond. We are seeking more information on that and the surrounding areas. I request Islamic Relief staff to update us on that as they are also present and working in the area.

• Rural areas in Bagh, Rawalakot and Hajeera in AJK

In general, all the far-off rural areas need attention now, although affected cities are still in a miserable condition and also need further support but the rural areas are desperate. Concerned people are - in hundreds - helping the affectees, however, they tend to choose those areas that are usually in the focus of media attention. These tend to be 'self-selected' and chosen. Every little effort is appreciable, however, what this means is that the unheard and the unseen and areas unknown to the general public, remain totally neglected.

The immediate needs include tents - the top priority. Tents are generally now not available in the market and the common assumption is that people need food for their survival in a disastrous situation. That may be true, but shelter is equally vital. Hence we appeal to all the friends, supporters and philanthropists to please send out tents as a priority, more than food items. Likewise bedding - blankets and quilts are also essential to protect to protect the homeless from the, now freezing cold night temperatures.

Food could be taken as the third priority, after tents and warm beddings.
